Stephenson College has been rated as ‘good’ by Ofsted inspectors, who had high praise for the college’s standard of practical teaching and excellent relationships with industry partners both locally and nationally across the United Kingdom.
Inspectors spent four days at the college’s Coalville and Nottingham campuses where they assessed several key areas, of which five were rated good, with our adult learning provision being considered ‘outstanding’.
The report, released on the 15th June, states: “Teachers are passionate, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. They use their skills and experience exceptionally well to support students.”
It was also said that ‘The quality of provision for adult learners on employability programmes is outstanding.’ A short recurring employability programme run in partnership with East Midlands Airport has led to many unemployed adults making substantial and life-changing progress in their self-confidence and long-term employability skills.
Key findings from the report also highlighted Stephenson College’s success regarding its ever-growing apprenticeship provision stating: ‘The college offers a wide and flexible curriculum that is very responsive to the needs of apprentices and the skills required by local and national employers. College leaders and managers have established very productive and effective links with employers. They work well together on curriculum design and delivery to ensure that apprentices have very good opportunities to develop their skills and achieve their qualifications.’
Other findings include:
• The college’s modern, well-equipped and resourced vocational workshops in engineering and construction reflect commercial standards.
• The behaviour of students and apprentices is exemplary and both staff and students are extremely respectful, thoughtful and tolerant of each other.
• Governors use their expertise and skills effectively to hold senior leaders and managers to account.
• Staff and students are extremely respectful, thoughtful and tolerant of each other.
Principal and Chief Executive of Stephenson College Dr. Nigel Leigh, said: “Ofsted consider Stephenson College to be a good college and we are pleased that this is an evaluation that is consistent with our self-assessment.
“The quality of our teaching, learning and assessment; the outcomes of our learners, their personal development, behaviour and welfare and the effectiveness of our leadership and management were all graded as good by Ofsted in our latest report.
“Ofsted’s positive view of our college reflects the hard work and professionalism of our staff, students, governors and of our employer partners, both nationally and locally, with whom Ofsted believe we have outstanding relationships. We are particularly pleased with Ofsted’s recognition that the behaviour of our students and apprentices is “exemplary” and that they feel safe at our college. I would like to thank everyone in the Stephenson community for their contributions towards producing the positive comments contained in our most recent inspection report."
