Last Friday, as part of our Equality & Diversity Week, we welcomed three local schools into college for a ‘Breaking the Mould’ Experience Day.  Year 10 students from De Lisle College, Rawlins Academy and Woodbrook Vale experienced taster sessions in a variety of industries including Hair & Beauty, Engineering and Construction. All students were involved in activities from both female and male dominated industries to experience that there are no stereotypical jobs and, in the words of one of our female students who is  currently on a HGV Level 3 Apprenticeship with Volvo Trucks, ‘If you’re interested in it then just go for it!’. The students did exactly that, plaiting hair, tattoo making, building a wall and making metal keyrings, regardless of their gender.

The experience was enjoyed by all with many students giving a score of 5 out of 5 for the day! One member of staff from a visiting school stated;

 ‘I just wanted to say a big thank you for hosting your "Breaking the Mould Day" last Friday, our students really enjoyed the day and I am sure they got a lot out of the experience. We were very impressed with the organisation of the day and also with your college. It is clear to see that you have great facilities and opportunities for your students and also dedicated and knowledgeable tutors to deliver the lessons. I would certainly recommend Stephenson College to our students now and hopefully we can form a strong link in the future.’

We look forward to welcoming more students into our college with more of these events planned for the future. Keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for details.
