Going well on my degree course

I discovered the Access course by accident. I´d got my own cleaning and ironing business and was thinking of ways to progress and I couldn´t decide whether to try and expand the business or move in another direction. Then a friend mentioned the Access course and within two weeks I´d enrolled. During the course we had a number of visiting speakers from various occupations and someone from the Youth Offenders Service got me interested in volunteer work. I´ve been a volunteer ever since and now I want to work within the Social/Probation Services. My studies of Psychology and Sociology helped prepare me for this and I am now doing well on my Social Policy Degree at university.

Helpful and supportive tutors

I wanted to change my career and decided to go back to college to study Multimedia. I found all my tutors to be helpful and supportive and that they pushed me to achieve my best. The course has taught me a wide range of art and design skills, and has given me the confidence to believe in my goal to become a Graphic Designer. I have just been interviewed for a Degree course and hope to get a place at University studying Graphic Design.

Business and beyond

I came to Stephenson College as a full time student studying an Advanced GNVQ in Business whilst here I also studied NVQ Accounts as an additional qualification. I then went on complete the Professional Accountancy Certificate and achieved chartered status, and I´m now a Governor at Stephenson College.

I want to be a teacher

I left school at year 10 due to bullying and joined the Child Care and Education Level 2 course, gaining a Distinction, went on to the Level 3 course, at the same time did a GCSE (English Language) and currently working towards GCSE Math´s in the evening. I am now going to university to further my education and the plan to become a Primary School Teacher. Without the support of staff at Stephenson College I never had these opportunities and been able to fulfil my dream of becoming a teacher.

You helped me get a job

Studying my BTEC National Diploma has helped me get a full-time job in the motor trade. It all started with work experience at a local independent garage, I then started a two year full time course whilst still at the garage. This gave me the technical theory into the work I was doing and went hand-in-hand with my work at the garage. The course itself included many useful units in variety of related subjects. I had no problem handing in my assignments due to the flexibility to the staff.

My way into nursing

After having a number of care-related jobs, I decided I wanted to get into nursing. I saw the Access course in the college brochure and went in to find out more about it. It´s brilliant course for a working mother like me, with a timetable that lets you work around your family. Amongst other things, I studied Psychology, Human Biology and Health Studies. It was hard work but it was great to really get my brain working, meet like-minded people and make new friends. I´m now doing an Adult Nursing Diploma and when the course has finished I´ll be a fully qualified nurse! But I haven´t forgotten Stephenson College and I recently went back to talk to this year´s students as a guest speaker!

Tutors are great

I have achieved my NVQ Level 2 and am currently taking my level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing. I am now looking forwards to starting the NVQ Level 3 in September 2007. The tutors are great at Stephenson College; I was also given additional support to help with my Dyslexia. The college also provided me with a laptop to help fit my college work in at home, which was proving difficult because of heavy family commitments, this worked very well and my work improved as a result. I also work locally as a stylist at a commercial salon in Ashby-de-la-Zouch.

Xsara Waine - Student NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing

I´m a Deputy Manager now

I started my career in Care in 2003 and my NVQ Level 2 in Care at Stephenson College in the same year. Since then I have passed the Level 2 and 3. I enjoyed my courses with the college and the tutors were great, I am now a Deputy Manger and taking the Level 4. Thank you for all the help and advice through the years.

I´ve started my own business

I really enjoyed taking my NVQ, I learned a great deal, it has helped me to understand and gain the skills needed to help set-up my own business as a Livery Yard. I also teach and am a riding instructor, and practice what I preach, I also compete as an eventer on my own horse. Since passing the NVQ I have started my own Livery Yard and horse car gives me the confidence in what I am doing, and gives my clients confidence in my abilities.

Hollie Jones - NVQ Level 2 Horse Care

The workshops are fantastic

I´m currently doing a First Diploma in Motor Vehicle Technology course at Stephenson College. I enjoy the course very much although it is not always easy. I am able to work on different cars and the workshops are fantastic. I find the tutors very approachable, helpful and good to work with. This course has given me the opportunity to gain work experience and hopefully from this I will be able to get a job.

Rob Mathews - First Diploma Motor Vehicle Technology

I´m a coach now

I came to Stephenson College not really knowing what I wanted to do or what college could do for me. I enrolled on the Sport First Diploma. Work wasn´t really an option as the opportunities were very limited and something that my parents wouldn´t go for.

I have enjoyed my time at Stephenson College and learned a lot and now have a better idea of what I want to do. The teachers are helpful, interesting and supportive and have really given me the opportunity to better myself as a coach. During the second year of my course I was fortunate enough to work on my coaching skills at Leicester City Football Club, this was a golden opportunity for me and I really enjoyed it.

I now coach an under 7´s football team twice a week, I have been to three university open days and I have started to plan my next four years. I would suggest to anyone thinking about college to give it ago, it doesn´t matter if you are not sure about your future, the college will help you.

Nick Lester - BTEC National Diploma in Sport

I´ve gained two qualifications

I have previously taken a Child Care course at Stephenson College and then decided to enrol on a Travel and Tourism course and become a Children´s Rep. I enjoyed finding out about the cruise industry and how travel agents work on a day-to-day basis. My tutors are great, very professional and have helped me throughout the course, I also received support with my reading and math´s, and gained qualifications in both subjects.

Sophie Cotton - Travel and Tourism (National Diploma Student)

I´ve been promoted

I started at Stephenson in 2003, where I completed the NVQ Level 2 in Care. I work for Vista a local charity for people with a visual impairment. After waiting a while I decided to move onto the NVQ Level 3, I was working as a Relief Senior at the time. I am now an Assistant Manager and I have now started the NVQ Level 4, I also aim to complete the Registered Managers Award.

Lisa Mechan - Care Student

Airport bound

I joined the Travel and Tourism course because I wanted to learn more about the industry and then progress into a job that I really want to do. I found the course very useful in helping to get a career; I recently got a job as a Passenger Service Agent at East Midlands Airport and start there when I finish at college. The two-year course was very interesting; I particularly enjoyed learning about Holiday Reps and Handling Air Passengers.

We also got to go on some great trips; we went to Rome, France, the Peak District and East Midland and Birmingham Airports. I would recommend anyone with an interest in the Travel and Tourism industry to seriously consider taking this course at Stephenson College.

Amy Fawkes - Travel and Tourism

I want a better job at DHL

When I started at DHL I knew nothing about Maths or Computers. I am studying Maths to help me progress and get a better job in DHL. It has helped me outside of work when I go shopping as I can now work out what change I should be getting. Mark is a great tutor and is very fair.
